Supe's On: Why is reading important?

By:
Dr. Jarod Larson, BVSD superintendent
Reading is powerful. It informs, inspires, and entertains. In addition to the stimulation of critical thinking, reading builds vocabulary and other language skills. Looking further down the road for our children, research studies indicate reading proficiency is linked to future job success and income earning. Simply put, reading is very important for life readiness.
A few important things parents and guardians can do to promote reading include:
• Model the importance of reading
• Encourage your child to read for enjoyment
• Ask your child about what they have been reading
Together, we can promote reading proficiency and student success!
I want to thank all the parents and guardians that participated in the parent-teacher conference survey. There were 828 respondents.
• 509 (61.5 percent) respondents indicated they preferred full - regular days of school on parent-teacher conference days.
• 319 (38.5 percent) respondents indicated they preferred two-hour early dismissal days of school on parent-teacher conference days.
Given the sample size and utilizing a 95 percent confidence interval, we can infer that 64.75 to 58.25 percent of our total parent population prefer full regular days of school on parent-teacher conferences. I again want to thank all of our survey respondents for their insight as we strive to meet the needs of our students and parents.
In observance of Veterans Day, there will be no school on Friday, Nov. 10. Looking further ahead this month, there will be no school for Thanksgiving break Wednesday, Nov. 22 thru Friday, Nov. 24.
Go, Lynx!
