Supe's On: STEM brings real world learning into classroom

By:
Dr. Jarod Larson, BVSD superintendent
Preparing students to be life-long learners and productive citizens through a positive learning environment requires collaborative efforts of educators, students, parents, and our community. In addition to our fundamental emphasis on reading and mathematics, the Brandon Valley Strategic Plan highlights our development and incorporation of K-4 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) into our elementary curriculum. This initiative is being led through Sherri Nelson, BVSD Director of Instruction, Curriculum, and Assessment, and Kim Skibsted, BVSD STEM Integrationist.
With the assistance of Architecture Incorporated, Fred Assam Elementary students designed projects and presented ideas for construction within our new elementary school. From playground layouts to interior design, with cost estimates, the kids covered it all. I’m not certain we will be able to incorporate a jacuzzi hot tub as one group suggested, but we are certainly proud of their incredible work. Great job!
In addition to our Strategic Plan, our Vision of a Graduate also guides the work of our schools. Our vision for all children is to LEAD – LEARN – SERVE. With the legislative process underway, there is a prime opportunity to promote our students’ understanding of contributions made through civic engagement. Our student council participation in Brandon Day at the Legislature supports the understanding of civic duty through service and leadership.
With a clear vision and sound plan, we continually work to produce productive citizens. Together, working in a collaborative, we can provide our kids an excellent educational experience.
Go Lynx!
