Supe's On: School activities make for well-rounded education

By:
Dr. Jarod Larson, Superintendent of Brandon Valley School District
With the school year approaching, a wide variety of extracurricular activities will soon begin. I strongly encourage all students to get involved. Participating in an extracurricular activity has tremendous benefits. Research shows students in extracurricular activities have higher rates of academic achievement and are more likely to graduate from high school. In addition to the academic benefits, extracurricular activities teach valuable life lessons, such as commitment, teamwork, leadership and the acceptance of a role. Encourage a child’s participation; activities are a critical component of providing a well-rounded education.
The 2017-18 Master Activities Calendar is a valuable resource to view extracurricular opportunities. Located on our district’s homepage at brandonvalleyschools.com under Quick Links, the Activities Calendar provides great information on all the district’s activities, as well as dates.
The deadline to get your child’s bus pass is Aug. 9. The deadline must be met for your child to access district transportation the first two weeks of school. If your child will be utilizing district-provided transportation, please purchase your bus pass online at the webmall or at the transportation facility prior to Aug. 9.
Upcoming dates for parents and guardians to note as school approaches are:
Aug. 9 – Bus pass purchase deadline
Aug. 21 – Elementary schools open houses
Aug. 22 – BV Intermediate and Middle School open houses
Aug. 23 – First day of school; high school open house
