SUPE'S ON: Keep your child reading to avoid the ‘summer slide’

As hard as it is to believe, a month of the summer break has flown by in the blink of an eye. It is not too late for our children to avoid the “summer slide”.  A few key tips for successful summer reading include:

· Set a summer reading goal

· Make it fun – Invite a friend to the library

· Match ability and interest in selected books

· Read everyday

Make leisure reading a component of your child’s summer routine to help ensure they do not catch a ride down the “summer slide”!

As quickly as the summer break is moving, it is not nearly as fast as the South Dakota Gatorade Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year – Krista Bickley. Congratulations Krista on this outstanding accomplishment. Your outstanding academic and extracurricular performance is an inspiration – Great Work!

I want to extend a special thank you to Brandon Valley Board of Education member, Sue Hegland, for her effort, commitment, and servant leadership over the past six years. The children of our school district have greatly benefited from her work, especially in the area of literacy within our district’s approach to reading instruction. Thank you, Sue, for all that you have done!

On a special note, our district’s FY18 Budget Hearing and Annual Organizational Meeting will be held on Monday, July 17, 2017. The budget hearing will be held at 6 p.m. with the board of education meeting to follow at 6:30 p.m.

Go Lynx!
