Supe's On: BV students prepare for spring testing

By:
Supt. Dr. Jarod Larson

Spring season is state testing seasoning. Within the Brandon Valley School District, and all other public-school districts in South Dakota, our students in grades 3-8 and 11 will participate in the English Language Arts and Math state assessment. Students in grades 5, 8, and 11 participate in the Science state assessment.

The South Dakota Department of Education has outlined, “The goal of the Department of Education is that all high school students graduate college, career, and life ready. To this aim, the South Dakota assessment system is designed to provide districts, schools, and parents with the information they need to ensure that their students remain on track to reach this goal.” Within the Brandon Valley School District, our formal and informal assessment data is utilized to drive curriculum and instruction as we make data driven decisions to promote and maximize student learning and growth.

Due to the important nature of the decisions being guided by student achievement data, it is critical that our students come prepared to give their best effort. Families can help promote performance on days of the assessment by making certain their child gets a good night’s sleep and eats breakfast. It is also important to encourage students to give their best effort and take their time. Together, we promote student achievement.
