The nation is about to know what Brandon Valley has known all along: Mark Stadem is a coach of “national coach of the year” caliber.
Stadem, who guided the Lady Lynx to the 2019 AA state title, is South Dakota’s 2020 Girls’ Basketball Coach of Year finalist for national honor. To be considered for this award, the nominee must possess an outstanding coaching longevity and win-loss record, championship years, awards received and service to the coaching professional and to South Dakota athletes.
After 22 years at the helm of the Lady Lynx, Stadem retired from coaching following the 2019 season.
“It was time. And they understand,” he said.
During his 22 seasons, Stadem racked up 276 victories and 228 losses. He also led the Lady Lynx to two state championships, the first in 2011 and of course, capping off the 2018-19 season with the AA’s top prize. Along with the state titles, his teams at BV have won countless Eastern South Dakota Conference titles and accolades.
Stadem and the other finalists will be honored July 23 at the National Awards Banquet during the 55th annual NHSACA Conference in Lincoln, Neb. This annual event is attended by athletic directors and coaches in 19 sports from throughout the United States.
In addition to Stadem, the other 2020 Coach of the Year finalists from South Dakota are: Jason Bohl, Garretson High School, girls’ cross country; Tom Culver, Avon High School, football; Scott Schultz, Bridgewater-Emery High School, boys’ basketball; Kari Jung, Warner High School, volleyball; Dan Mitchell, Yankton High School assistant in boys’ sports; and Kerry Beyer, Rapid City Stevens High School assistant in girls’ sports.
Cal Corey of Sturgis and Connie Nyhaug of Viborg will also be inducted into the NHSACA Hall of Fame on Tuesday, July 21.
