Optimistically speaking... Cal Shaykett (left) took top honors at the BV Optimist Club’s annual oratorical contest held March 12 at the Corson Theatre. Capturing second and third places, respectively, are Hannah Frost and Rachel Spencer. Both Shaykett and Frost are seniors and now advance to the zone competition. Spencer is a sophomore. All three contestants will be awarded monetary scholarships at the BV Optimist’s April 7 meeting. Jill Meier/BV Journal
Playing a round Sam Derynck golfed solo at the Brandon Golf Course, which opened unseasonably early last week. “It’s awesome,” Derynck said of being able to get in a round in mid-March. “I’ve been itching to get out all winter. It’s kind of nice to play when it’s still winter.” Course pro Andrew Bauer said about 100 rounds were played March 7 and 8 and another 20 on March 11, the day Derynck was photographed on the course. Bauer said once carts are allowed, he expects the number of rounds to grow. “Carts are used for about 70 percent of our rounds,” he said. The last time the course was open for play in early March was 2017, said Bauer, who added the course was open for play in mid-March in 2015 and 2016. Jamie Hult/BV Journal
