Brandon Valley seniors Lucas Schobert and Mitch Gusso guided the boys’ golf team to a seventh-place finish at the Mitchell Invite on Sept. 15. Lynx head coach Scott Carroll said his team “held their own placing seventh” in the biggest tournament they play in all season with 19 teams.
“Every AA school is at this tournament, so it’s a great measure of how you stack up,” he said.
Schobert shot his best round of the year, producing a 77, and Gusso finished one stroke more at 78.
“Lucas played really well for the Lynx today. He stayed away from a couple of bad holes and played extremely well, and Mitch has started to figure some things out, which is exciting,” Carroll said. “I will need these two seniors to play well over the last couple weeks of our season.”
Matt Gusso carded an 80, followed by 81’s from both Jackson Faber and Jack Lee. Emmet Hansen shot an 83.
“As we head into the conference tourneys and state we really need to get four scores in the 70’s. We are really close and hopefully are saving our best for last. Jack Lee and Emmet Hansen also played well today shooting an 81 and 83.”
Both posting a 69, Roosevelt’s Jack Lundin and Washington’s Will Grevlos battled it out for medalist honors, with Lundin winning the sudden death playoff on second playoff hole.
Brookings Invite
Brandon Valley underclassman Matt Gusso turned in his best 18-hole round of the season, firing a 77 at the Sept. 11 Brookings Invitational. Gusso finished one shot out of the top 15.
“This is a round Matt needed,” Lynx head coach Scott Carroll said. “He has been close, but he put it together today and played really well for the Lynx.”
Two Lynx golfers – Jackson Faber and Lucas Schobert – both posted 82s to land in a tie for 25th place. Mitch Gusso rounded out the team total with an 83, putting him in a tie for 30th.
Carroll said he is seeing weekly improvement in the team’s play.
“We need to get a couple more rounds under 80. We are close and that is what is exciting,” he said.
Jonah Dohrer of Aberdeen Central carded a 67 to earn medalist honors.
The Lynx will compete on back to back days (Sept. 25-26) for the ESD and Metro conference titles before heading to the State A tournament in Pierre on Oct. 2-3.
