Minnehaha County Human Services will celebrate Safe Home’s, “A Decade of Making a Difference” at an open house from 2-4 p.m., Friday, April 22 at 320 W. Third St. in Sioux Falls.

On Jan. 25, 2012, Safe Home opened its doors to provide dignified, affordable housing to those in need in the greater Sioux Empire community. To date, Safe Home has served 142 individuals experiencing long term homelessness and alcohol dependence.

From the start of a pilot project in 2007, it took several years of persistent collaboration and partnership building to make Safe Home a reality.

Safe Home is modeled on the Housing First concept, which addresses immediate housing needs along with providing supportive services through case management for residents. The Safe Home Housing First Model has proven to be successful in providing a long-term, safe home for those in need, while also reducing costs associated with providing an appropriate level of care for residents. That care includes affordable housing to vulnerable individuals experiencing long term homelessness and alcohol dependence.

Partnerships with Minnehaha County Board of Commissioners, Minnehaha County Housing and Redevelopment Commission, Sioux Falls Housing, South Dakota Housing Development Authority, Lloyd Property Management, Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, Sioux Falls Police, Citibank, and the residents of Minnehaha County have all been important in building a successful residence.
