Big plays and defense were definite factors in Brandon Valley’s 21-11 loss to Metro Conference foe, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, during Saturday afternoon’s road game at Howard Wood Field.
“We stayed with them and fought and we got our opportunity at the end,” Lynx head coach Chad Garrow said.
Trailing 14-11, the opportunity came with just over three minutes to play. Stationed at mid-field, the Lynx began their march to the 11-yard line on a trio of Braiden Petersen carries and a facemask penalty incurred by the Rough Riders. On second and 10, SFR’s DeMareio Hester stripped the ball from Petersen, and it was scooped up by Roosevelt’s Jackson Clark, who high-tailed it 90 yards for the gut-punching touchdown.
“We just didn’t get the backside sealed and a guy came inside one of our blocks and got Petey from the side and was able to strip him. It was a big play by their guy,” Garrow said.
The Lynx offense couldn’t find its rhythm in their first two drives, back-to-back three-and-out series that gave the Riders a short field advantage on both occasions. The Riders plunged in from a yard out on their first series for the 7-0 lead, but were hampered by the Lynx defense and a series of self-inflicted penalties on their second try.
BV mixed it up in an early second-quarter series, and on the heels of an eight-play drive, looked to Jorey Sorenson to make good on a 23-yard field goal. With 8:25 to play, the Lynx were within striking distance, 7-3.
BV picked up their offensive tempo in the second half, starting with an onside kick that was claimed by the Riders. With just under three minutes to play in the third, SFR hit pay dirt a second time, boosting their lead to 14-3.
“We were just going to go straight at them, kind of hit them in the mouth, go right at them, trying to mix in the inside run with the outside run a little bit,” Garrow said. “We were right there, but they made better plays, and if you look at it, it was big plays.”
With 5:40 to go in the game, BV’s second scoring drive resulted in a Thomas Scholten to Max Wilde TD pass. Scholten also found Cole Siegfried on the ensuing two-point conversion to get within a field goal of the Riders, 14-11. Roosevelt essentially sealed the victory on the fumble return.
The Roosevelt defense contained Petersen to 106 yards on 28 carries and no touchdowns, a far cry from his 221-yard and four touchdown games he’s been averaging.
Nick Hoekstra helped the Rough Riders out on foot and in the air. He had 13 carries for 61 yards and caught four passes for 96 yards
For the Lynx, Scholten completed 20 of 33 passes for 250 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also suffered an injury to his wrist.
The 3-2 Lynx head to face Rapid City Stevens this Friday. The Raiders, also 3-2, gave Washington a scare in their Metro Conference meeting last week, but came out on the downside of the 41-39 outcome.
“Stevens has a lot of guys back from last year. Their offensive line, all of those kids are returning. They’re good, they have a lot of skilled kids and they have a lot of speed, so it will be a difficult road trip,” Garrow anticipates.
