From the Pulpit: The world needs you to melt the 'bad stuff'

One of the many things I love about parenting a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old is the sheer joy that they find in ordinary things. They delight in a semi-truck driving past us on the interstate or spotting cows in the fields. The day that the Ranger Rick magazine appears in the mailbox is an exciting day. Our walks include the inspection of all manner of bugs, rocks, and sticks.

Another exciting activity that I do with my boys is a trip to the car wash. There is something so mesmerizing about tri-color foam, the sounds, and the gift of a clean van. We decided to take advantage of the warmer days last weekend and got in line at the car wash. Together we were noticing all the other vehicles and pointing out the salt covering them.

All of a sudden, I thought of Jesus’s words in my mind in a new way.

“You are the salt of the earth” (Matt. 5:13)

This winter, we have all watched the salt melt away the ice on the roads and stick to the cars around us. We have all wished there was more salt and less ice. Salt is a simple ingredient that unites us in the common goal of melting ice.

God is calling us to be salty ice melt in this world. We were created to melt away the icy hatred that surrounds us: to call out prejudice and melt self-centeredness. We were created to melt away the things that hurt people.

And just like one bucket of salty ice melt doesn’t make too much of a dent on I-90, we are all needed to work together to melt hate. Our words and actions matter in this world. And together, we can make so much more impact.

God made you to be salt.

And this world needs you and your unique gifts of melting the bad stuff of this world.
