From the Pulpit: The power of prayer

By:
Pastor Tony Toth, Faith United Presbyterian

I had an idea for this article that I am setting aside for now. My heart is not in it anymore. Instead, my heart is drawn to pray for those around the world who are facing war, persecution, and death.

The people in Ukraine, Russia, and the surrounding countries need our prayers. With all the news focused on Ukraine we need to be careful not to forget Afghanistan where there are still many families hiding, fearful for their lives and trying to get out. The list is too long to write about here and I would surely forget too many of the people carrying the weight of incredible fear around the world.

I believe in the power of prayer. I have experienced it in my life, I have witnessed it work in the lives of others, and the Scriptures declare their benefits and effectiveness. The Apostle Paul tells us in his letter to the Philippians, “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Phil 4:6). For those of us who don’t know how, this is a way that anyone can help in this moment for this time. If you desire to, please join me in prayer.

Creator God, my hope is in you. There are many around the world in desperation of the hope of salvation, redemption, forgiveness, and reconciliation. May your great mercy shower the blessing of peace, the peace that transcends all understanding, upon those who need it now. As conflict continues around our world I pray for patience and endurance for those who are in the middle of it. We hold onto the promise of your Word that says God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Help those in trouble. Guide them, comfort them, love on them, and protect them. I pray for wisdom for those in leadership and positions of power so that they may be a part of doing what is right and that what is good wins in the end. In all the ways I would like to pray but don’t know how, I trust in you and ask for your will to be done. Amen.

Thank you for praying with me.
