From the Pulpit: Mother's Day 2022

Mothers have been honored thru the centuries. Ancient mythology, stone carvings, stories of bravery and sacrifice have always been with us.

The birth of Mother’s Day in America began before the Civil war. Ann Reeves Jarvis first began to promote this as a way of training young mothers how to properly care for their children. After the Civil war, in the year 1868, the mothers of both Confederate and Yankee soldiers were gathered to encourage healing and peace to a divided nation.

In the year 1908, Anna Jarvis, the daughter of Ann, began to promote a day to honor moms. And in 1914, Mother’s Day became an official U.S. holiday. Setting aside a day to honor motherhood.

The Bible also embraces the idea of mom’s and honor.

Ex. 20:12 says, “Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

Dt. 27:16 says, “Cursed is the man who dishonors his father or mother.”

In one of the great ironies of life, in the years to come, Anna Jarvis pushed back against this holiday. She was appalled that it became so commercialized. What was intended to be a day of love and honor, had become more about selling flowers and chocolate.

This Mother’s Day, honor mom with your heart. And instead of just one day, let’s make it every day.

Thanks mom, I love you … and God Bless.
