From the Pulpit: Are we having fun yet?

On a hot summer August day, two young lads were out playing in their neighborhood schoolyard when one asked the other, “Are we having fun yet?”
It’s a question many ask about life, not just young boys. We sometimes just go through the motions of living without enjoying the moment.
The story is told of a couple who were traveling on a train. The lady was having trouble placing her belongings in the railroad coach. She put some bundles first on the seat, then on the floor. She opened and closed windows, adjusted shades and fidgeted like a nervous hen. When her husband protested, she said, “I want to get fixed so I can enjoy the scenery in comfort.” He shook his head and replied, “Honey, we’re not going that far, and with all your fussing the scenery will all be over before you get fixed to enjoy it.”
Many people go through life “getting fixed to enjoy it” while life passes and is gone. Every day God’s world is before us to see and enjoy. We’re often too busy getting ready for some future time and never see the wonders of the present.
The words of the psalmist should be a call to awareness to us all: “This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). There is so much in our lives that can distract us from experiencing the fullness of each moment. It almost takes a commitment on our part to remain aware and sensitive to the possibilities that each moment brings to find that fullness.
When that happens, we won’t need to ask, “Are we having fun yet?” We’ll be having it.
