Brandon Valley’s own Derek Outland has been named Region Wrestling Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year.
The Lynx head wrestling coach was voted the honor by his peers in Region 2A, which consists of eight other schools.
In his 21 years of coaching Lynx wrestling and fourth as head coach, Outland has remained dedicated to recruiting athletes, developing off-season strength and conditioning programs and opportunities to challenge his athletes and prepare them for the post-season.
“The coaching award is a nice honor that shows what a great job our coaching staff has done in our entire program this season,” Outland said. “All of our coaches are dedicated to our athletes and work passionately to make them better wrestlers and individuals.”
In the 2018-19 season, BV took the Metro Athletic Conference title and qualified 10 to the 2019 Class A State Wrestling Tournament, returning with three medalists and one state champion.
Outland also coached five region champions this year, including 138-pounder Isaac Klinkhammer, who was named Region 2A’s Outstanding Wrestler at the Sanford Pentagon Feb. 15.
“Coach Outland is steadily building the Lynx as a contender in every match, tournament and at the conference, region and state levels,” noted BV activities director Randy Marso.
