A series of holiday candles and Christmas stockings are now lighting up Splitrock Boulevard.
The new décor replaces the ornaments, greenery and lights that encased the flower planters on the light poles.
City alderpersons Jo Hausman and Blaine Jones spearheaded the new décor project.
“You know me, I love to decorate,” Hausman said. “I’ve always wanted new décor and every time we get the Christmas magazines in, I look at them, but Blaine was the one that came forth this year and said, ‘Let’s do it.’”
The Christmas stocking and candle decorations – outlined by holiday-colored lights – now adorn 29 light poles along the heavily-traveled north-south highway.
The city invested $8,355 of its city promotion fund in the new décor.
And there’s more to come, according to City Administrator Bryan Read. Next year’s city promotions fund budget earmarks $35,000 for Christmas decorations for both Holly and Sioux boulevards.
Hausman said different styles of decorations, such as snowflakes, angels and toy soldiers will be added to the mix of décor.
“We’re not going to do the same ones that are on Splitrock,” she said. “Maybe there will be a snowflake or an angel. We went with something this year that looked good and fit within our realms of what we wanted to spend.”
In the few weeks that the décor has been up, Hausman said she’s received positive feedback.
“When they first put them up, I was taking pictures of them and people driving by said how nice they looked,” she said.
