Staff report

Memorial Day programs are planned for both Brandon and Valley Springs on Monday.

Cemetery flags and boulevard flags will be put out on Friday, May 26 at 9 a.m. following the Friday breakfast. Weather permitting, the casket flags will be put out at the Legion Hall and Pleasant View Cemetery at 6:30 a.m. on May 29. We will join the Brandon VFW and American Legion for their Memorial Day program and then return to our Legion Hall for our 11 a.m. program.

Brandon and Valley Springs will have their Memorial Day services Monday, May 29, starting at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.

The Brandon program begins at the Veterans Memorial (Aspen and Splitrock boulevards) at 9 a.m. and then proceeds to the Brandon Lutheran Cemetery (Sioux Boulevard) for a reading of the deceased and a 21-gun salute for the fallen soldiers.

The Valley Springs memorial begins at 11 a.m. at the Legion Hall.

David Rieger of the Veterans Community Project in Sioux Falls is this year’s guest speaker. The Veterans Community Project is a community of tiny homes for veterans. The first five homes opened last week.

Following the program at the Legion Hall, the ceremony proceeds to Pleasant View Cemetery for a firing squad salute for the fallen and then returns to the Legion Hall for a free-will donation lunch courtesy of the Valley Springs Legion Auxiliary.
