Lynx cross country crowned individual champions in every division Saturday at the ESD Conference championships. They are, from left, Britt Elkin, Luke Kocer, Coach Tony Thoreson, Madison Pederson and Mia Wentzy.

The Lynx cross country teams are the kings and queens of the Eastern South Dakota Conference. And they both proved that Saturday at Aberdeen by charging to the front of the pack of the nine-team league.

Along with winning both varsity team titles, the Lynx boys’ JV team also produced an ESD title-worthy effort, while the JV girls garnered runner-up honors.

A trio of Lynx runners were the first to step across the finish line in their respective races. Senior Britt Elkin continued his parade of title wins behind his 15:54.79 run. Freshman Mia Wentzy and seventh-grader Addison Scholten were the first and second to complete the varsity girls’ race. Wentzy cruised the northern South Dakota course in 18:29.02 and Scholten clocked in at 19:04.74.

BV’s junior varsity teams also crowned a pair of medalists in Luke Kocer and Madison Pederson. Kocer claimed the JV boy’s top prize on his 14:35.66 run and Pederson paced herself to a 17:19.25 first-place run.

“It’s better than I had expected and hoped for,” said coach Tony Thoreson. “We talked on the way up that we’re at this stage of the game where we don’t know how many races well get with everything going on, and so we wanted to go up there and do our absolute best.”

In support of Elkin’s individual title win, underclassmen Jeremiah Donahoe, Ben VanDeBerg, Paul Kern and Cole Borchardt all recorded top-20 races. Donahoe was ninth behind his time of 17:10.67 and VanDeBerg was just 13 seconds behind for 12th place. Kern and Borchardt were the 17th and 18th runners to complete the course, with just a mere four seconds between their times.

All seven of the Lady Lynx varsity runners nabbed a top-20 ranking. In addition to Wentzy’s and Scholten’s first- and second-place prize times, freshman Gracyn Gruber recorded a time of 19:38.57 and eighth-grader Sarah VanDeBerg finished the course in 19:49.52 to claim fourth and sixth, respectively.

Junior Kylie Foss was the ninth runner to step across the line. She turned in a time of 20:19.97, followed by Haley Bergan’s 12th-place run of 20:24.71 and senior Natalie Moose’s 15th-place finish in 20:34.17.

BV’s junior varsity programs had 14 runners place in the top 20.

It’s one of those deals that anybody could be on the other end of that spectrum – you do what you can with who you have and this year, we’re very fortunate to have a great bunch of kids who wanted to work hard and run well.

The Lynx are taking aim winning their respective Metro Conference titles, which will be run on the always-challenging course at Brandon’s McHardy Park. The JV girls’ race steps off first at 3 p.m. Thursday, followed by the JV boys, and varsity girls and boys ‘races.

While some would look at competing on your home course as an “advantage,” Thoreson said some of the kids are tiring of running the challenging McHardy course.

“We’re going to give it our best shot,” he said. “It’s fewer teams, but hopefully we’re going to do the same that we did at that Roosevelt meet. We’re going to try see about matching up with some of the better Metro teams to give us an ideadof what we have to do at the state meet.”
