Reorganized SDSU Robotics in winner’s circle
Engineering students at South Dakota State University have reorganized the SDSU Robotics Club and already have claimed a competition title.
The club hasn’t entered competitions since 2014, but this year an influx of interested computer science students led to a resurgence, said senior Sterling Berg, club president.
SDSU Robotics won the higher education division in the logistics competition at the SparkFun Autonomous Vehicle Competition at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Colorado Sept. 8. It placed second among all divisions.
“The challenge was to use a 9- and 24-inch, six-wheeled robot to move boxes around a warehouse-like environment. Bonus points were given for completing tasks autonomously. This was a challenging competition due to the timeline. We only had three weeks to work on the robot in person after we got back to classes,” Berg said.
He was joined on the trip by Joel Quanbeck, Erik Ode and Jacob Hegland, all of Brandon; Cody Kronaizl, of Vermillion; and Sydney Berry of Edinburg, Texas.
Berg said there are 25 members in the club and he expects that count to rise as they prepare for contests this spring and at SparkFun again next year.
Adviser is Jason Sternhagen, laboratory manager in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
