Michaela Birath stirs up the sand on her long jump landing at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays. She placed ninth.
It was a good couple of days at the races – and the fields – for Brandon Valley’s track and field teams Friday and Saturday.

The Lynx collected several individual and group medals at the 93rd annual Dakota Relays May 4-5 at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls. The elite Relays draws athletes from five states.
“If you can place at Howard Wood, it’s almost a bigger honor to be a Howard Wood champion than state,” said BV coach Troy Sturgeon.

The Lady Lynx sprint medley team stood strong behind their first-place state Class AA ranking with a first-place win for sprinters Hannah Hendrick, Krista Bickley, Kennedy Nuebel and Haylee Waterfall.
Hendrick also proved her top ranking in the pole vault, winning the event with teammate Marya Schiltz right behind her in second place.

South Dakota’s No. 1-ranked sprinter in the 110-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, Braiden Petersen, was the 10-meter champ in the Howard Wood heat.

Taia Rude took second in the 300-meter hurdles and third in the high jump, while Brielle Dixon, ranked third in the 100-meter hurdles, came in fifth.

Trinity Law leaped to a third-place finish in the long jump, Josh Donahoe claimed fourth in the boys’ 300-meter hurdles and Ethan Tellinghuisen, the fifth-ranked pole vaulter in Class AA, stayed true to his ranking by placing fifth.
Several BV athletes had personal bests at the meet, including Austin Skow in the pole vault, an event the Lynx performed particularly well in.

“Having that personal best on a stage like Howard Wood is even better,” Sturgeon said.

BV junior varsity sprinters had a big day at the races, too; both the boys’ and girls’ eighth-grade relay teams took home first-place medals in their respective runs.

A burst of rain called canceled the boys’ 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relays.

“It would have been nice to see how we would’ve stacked up there,” Sturgeon said.

Several Lady Lynx have qualified for state track and field competition in addition to Hendrick and Dixon – Nuebel in the 200- and 400-meter dashes and Brooklyn Vermeer in the 400-meter, Rude in the 300-meter hurdles and the high jump, Allison Reif in the 3200-meter run, Morgan Thompson in the high jump, Law and Mikaela Birath in the long jump, and Hendrick, Schiltz and Sydnie Pelletier in pole vault.

The Lady Lynx are ranked first in Class AA in the 800-meter relay and the sprint medley.

Joining Petersen and Tellinghuisen as state-qualifiers on the BV boys’ team are Trey Reindel in the 200-meter dash, Josh Donahoe in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, Ty McCann and Carter Oltoff in the high jump, Blake Larson in the shot put and Jorey Sorenson in the discus.
