Cole Borchardt’s 27th place finish at Saturday’s Huron Invitational aided the team’s third-place score.
Although the Lynx didn’t come away from the Huron Invitational with any team titles, Brandon Valley did come away with an assortment of notable achievements.

For starters, BV’s junior varsity programs had claim to the individual titles. Paul Kern bested the roster of JV boys with a time of 18:30 and Hannah Sprecher’s run of 21:54 won the JV girls’ race.

“Our JV kids ran very smart races,” said Lynx head coach Tony Thoreson.

Along with the dual JV medalist titles, the Lady Lynx varsity had a trio of runners register a top-10 time. Mia Wentzy set yet another school record for the Huron course. And both the Lynx junior varsity boys and girls had a plethora of runners record top-10 times. The boys had seven and the girls had five.

The 15-team meet presented of good racing for the Lynx, Thoreson said. “It was a nice mix of teams.”

BV’s varsity boys had two runners finish in the top 20. Jeremiah Donahoe paced his way to 15th place, stepping across the line in 17:45, while Ben VanDeBerg darted across the line in 17:48 to pick up 17th place.

Wentzy’s run of 19:09 earned her a third-place finish in the varsity girls’ race. Also recording top-10 times were Gracyn Gruber and Addison Scholten, who were sixth and eighth, respectively. Gruber turned in a time of 19:43 and Scholten paraded across the line in 19:44.
“The girls keep narrowing their gap (in between runners) down,” Thoreson said.

This Friday, the Lynx harriers make treks to the Rapid City Invite. It will be the first time this season BV will meet up against West River teams, including Rapid City Stevens, who typically field strong programs. Returning to the lineup after a two weeks out due to close contact quarantine is Lynx senior Britton Elkin, who, as Thoreson put it, “is chomping at the bit.”

BV’s junior varsity teams will compete Thursday in Brookings.
