Lynx runners excel to victory on home course

It’s hard to beat the Lynx on their home course, the always-challenging route across the hilly terrain of Brandon’s McHardy Park, and last week’s home five-team meet was no exception.
Both of Brandon Valley’s varsity teams ran to first-place finishes, while the Lynx underclassmen programs also turned in winning performances.
The Lynx boys were once again led on the course by senior Britton Elkin, who carved out a 16:50 run for first place. A trio of juniors followed his lead. Jeremiah Donahoe scored a third-place finish behind his 18:16 run, Riley Peyton was sixth, turning in a time of 18:47, and Cole Borchardt’s 18:54 time landed him in seventh place. Senior Tyler Groen (19:40), junior Dakota Dutson (19:49) and senior Aaron House (20:28) placed in the top 20. Groen was 15th, Dutson was 18th, and House claimed 20th.
Although runners from five schools competed, the Lady Lynx and Brookings were the only two programs to field full squads. BV was the clear winner, dismantling Brookings 15-49, claiming seven of the top 10 places. Guided by freshman Mia Wentzy, who stepped across the finish line in 19:59 for first, the next four places also went to the Lynx. Freshman Gracyn Gruber (second, 20:33) was followed by eighth-grader Sarah VanDeBerg (third, 20:50), seventh-grader Addison Scholten (fourth, 21:12) and freshman Haley Bergan (fifth, 21:18). Kylie Foss and Katie Wentzy round out the top 10 placings won by the Lynx. Foss raced to a seventh-place finish behind her 21:24 run, while Katie Wentzy clocked in at 22:09 for ninth. Both Chantel Bickler and Natalie Moose were steps behind.
BV’s junior varsity boys, and the middle school girls won their respective divisions. Camden Coughlin was third in the JV boy’s race behind his 15:19 run for third place, while the Lady Lynx JV was led by Lillian Sprecher’s first-place run of 17:51. Eli Woidyla was the second runner to cross the finish line in the boy’s middle school race, and Lillian Rude captured first in the girl’s middle school competition. She turned in a time of 14:16.
The Lynx will compete for a second consecutive week on their home course Saturday when they host the multi-team Lynx Invite, which steps off at 9 a.m. at McHardy Park.
