Harrisburg to join 11AAA ranks
Harrisburg will join the state’s largest football class for the next two-year cycle – 11AAA – beginning with the 2019 season. The Tigers moved up from 11AA after six years in that division, after making it to the DakotaDomes twice in the last three years. They currently compete in the largest classification in all other state-sanctioned sports.
The South Dakota Activities Association Board of Directors is expected to approve Harrisburg’s move to 11AAA at their regular meeting Jan. 16 in Pierre.
Harrisburg does not plan to join the Metro Athletic Conference, according to athletic director Jim Altenburg. They do, however, plan to move into the 11AAA division of the Eastern South Dakota Conference with Aberdeen, Brandon Valley, Rapid City Central, Rapid City Stevens and Watertown.
If approved, the 11AAA schedule may change from its current format, where the nine 11AAA teams play a nine-game schedule that includes two crossover opponents.
One option considered is to play a true round-robin, with each team playing one another. That schedule, however, would leave 11AA with just eight teams for the next two seasons.
