Lynx wrestlers landed an impressive third-place finish against 17 of South Dakota’s top wrestling programs that competed at the Floyd Farrand Invitational Dec. 29-30 at Lincoln High School.
Brandon Valley was bested by Harrisburg, who took the title with 203 points, followed by Watertown in secondat 191. The Lynx tallied 173.5 points to claim the third-place finish, just 2.5 points ahead of fourth-place Sturgis.
“This is one of the tougher tournaments in the state, so we were happy with our showing,” said Coach Derek Outland. “I thought we did a good job of fighting through some tough spots throughout the tournament and took advantage of the opportunities we had over the two days.”
BV’s rise to a top-three finish was led by freshman Isaac Klinkhammer, who wrestled his way to the top of the podium in the 120-pound weight class. Klinkhammer secured the title win behind a 10-1 major decision against Lincoln’s Beau Beavers.
BV also boasts a trio of wrestlers who brought home runner-up honors from the two-day holiday break event.
Second place was awarded to senior Creighton Klinkhammer in the 145-pound class. He secured two quick pins and a decision before succumbing to a familiar foe, Trey Hage of Vermillion.
Kobi Terpstra registered a trio of victories by decision before losing a 5-0 decision to Tyson Stoebner of Lennox en route to his second-place finish in the 138-pound weight class.
Damion Schunke claimed second in the 160-pound division, losing the 7-5 title decision to Bailey Brengle of Sturgis.
Freshman Tate Johnson (126) earned a third-place finish, while sophomores Jack Smith (132), Jorey Sorenson (160) and Sam Lembcke (195) all came away with fifth-place efforts from the two-day meet.
“We still have several areas where we can improve and will continue to work to make progress,” Outland said.  “The schedule picks up now the next two months as we move closer to the state tournament.  We compete this Friday at Huron in our first ESD dual, and Saturday we will be hosting our home tournament, which begins at 9:00.
BV now heads into a stretch of ESD Conference meets, including a Friday evening road dual at Huron, Saturday’s Lynx Invite and a triangular against Yankton and Aberdeen Central at Aberdeen on Friday, Jan. 12.
Teams scheduled to compete at the 9 a.m. Lynx Invite include Bon Homme-Scotland, Canton, Chamberlain, Dell Rapids, Flandreau, Fulda-Murray County Central, Garretson, Harrisburg, Huron, Lennox, Luverne, O’Gorman, Roosevelt, Tea, Tri-Valley, Vermillion, West Central, Yankton and of course, the Lynx.
