Prairie Green Golf Course proved to present challenges to the Lynx boys at last week’s Metro Preview.

In the five-team event, Brandon Valley carved out a fourth-place finish, which coach Todd Geerdes said is no reason to be disappointed.

“Yesterday was not only a tough day for the Lynx players, but also many others. I would say that the only team that played up to their potential were the O’Gorman Knights,” Geerdes said. “At this point we are the fourth-place team in the Metro Conference and that is where we finished. So, we can’t be too disappointed. Unfortunately, three of the top five teams in the state play in the Metro Conference.”

Prairie Green, described as a “long and tight” course, presented its own challenges, despite the 20 mph winds that made the course dry and fast, adding to the difficulty.

BV senior Emmet Hansen carded an 83 – 11 strokes over par – to tie for ninth place. Underclassmen Colby Meyer and Logan Kelling turned in an 88 and 90, respectively. Meyer’s score earned him a tie for 17th place and Kelling was 22nd in the 40-golfer event. Jace Christoffer’s 93 rounded out the team tally. He was 24th in the standings.

Also carding scores for BV were Nick Hokenstad and Owen Sanders, who tied for 29th behind their 96 totals, Austin Reiter (101, tie for 33rd) and Max Faber (106, 35th).

O’G’s Radley Mauney was the meet medalist, carding a 74. Jacob Stewart, also from the Knights roster, was second, shooting a 75. The Knights had five players in the top five, while runner up Sioux Falls Lincoln listed two.
Geerdes said Tuesday’s match served as yet another valuable lesson.

“Athletes need to have a short memory and today we are going to learn from yesterday and then put that round behind us and focus on what lies ahead,” he said. “We will continue to work on course management, controlling our emotions, and our short game. We have five weeks and we will continue to get better each week by focusing in practice.”

The team will compete Saturday in the Yankton Invite at Fox Run Golf Course, with play getting underway at 10 a.m. On Monday, the Lynx will compete in the Brookings Invite, also scheduled to tee off at 10 a.m.
