Lowell D. Wetrosky, 84

Lowell D. Wetrosky, 84, of Brandon, died Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at Bethany Home in Brandon. His funeral service was held Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory, Sioux Falls.

Lowell D. Wetrosky was born in Akron, Iowa on Aug. 20, 1938 to Elmer and Ruth (Eberhard) Wetrosky. He was the youngest of seven children. He was confirmed at Roseni Lutheran Church and graduated from Alcester High School in 1956. He married Norma Jean Abraham on Sept. 4, 1959 at Brule Creek Lutheran Church in Union County, S.D. Lowell served in the S.D. Air National Guard. He worked with his father and brothers on their farms until starting his career at Farmland Industries (Farmer’s Co-op). He worked for Farmland for 37 years, traveling throughout South Dakota and surrounding states where he made innumerable friends and acquaintances.

Lowell was an intensely loyal family man. As the youngest of seven children, he cherished everyone in his family, including his immediate family, cousins, nieces and nephews, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In his last few months, he spoke of his parents daily. He was also extremely social. Having coffee and playing cards with old and new friends were his favorite pastimes. Music was also a huge part of Lowell’s life. Growing up on the family farm, before television was available, the family would gather and sing around the piano while his mother played. Lowell sang in the high school glee club, a quartet with his brothers, the choir at church, or anywhere else music was playing, including Bethany Home in his final days.

Lowell and Norma Jean were married 63 years, residing in Brandon since 1976, where they had a wide circle of friends and were very active in the church. They enjoyed neighborhood get togethers, watching BVHS sporting and musical events, and playing golf with family and friends. In their retirement years, they wintered in Arizona and continued their active social life.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Norma Jean of Brandon; sons, Stephen (Barbara) of Brandon, Todd (Amanda) of Chaska, Minn.; daughter, Deanna (John) Uphoff of Glenwood, Iowa; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Norma Stene of Beresford; sister-in-law, Shirley Wetrosky of Sparks, Nev.; brother-in-law, Ken (Diane) Abraham of Tulsa, Okla., and many other relatives and friends.

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sheila Wetrosky; brothers, Donald, Dwight, and Clinton; sisters, Verda Akland and Irene Fickbohm; father and mother-in-law, Norman and Vivian Abraham; brother-in-law, Keith (Diane) Abraham.
