Lois J. Bruget, 98

Lois June Bruget, 98, of Brandon, S.D., passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 13, 2023, surrounded by some of her children, grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Lois was born Jan. 30, 1925, in Hudson, S.D. to Vernon Ahmann and Grace Dale. She attended school in Le Center, Minn., and graduated in 1943. After graduating she moved to Hawarden, Iowa, where she worked as a telephone operator and met her future husband.

On July 5, 1946, Lois married Norman Arnold Bruget after his return from World War II. They made their home on the family farm just outside of Hawarden. Lois and Norm lived in several cities and states in their life but ended up back in South Dakota to be centrally located between all their children. They had four children, Susan, David, Mary, and James.

In her life she saw many changes in the world and was not afraid to face any of them. The night before she passed, she was on Facebook at 10:30 in the evening “liking” a picture posted of her great-grandson. She was known for her feisty independence and love of driving. She was affectionately known as “Leadfoot Lois” or “Lead” for short and she insisted that she was going to drive one more time. She loved sports, all sports, and if the TV was on it would be on a “game”, even if it was a rerun. She especially loved watching her “baseball boys,” which included her grandson, but she considered the entire team her grandchildren. She would celebrate their victories with the occasional Bud light.

Most of all she loved her family, she found joy and pride in everything they did. But it was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren that brought her the greatest joy, watching them grow and stretch their wings in life was her motivation to live. The weekend before her passing was a two-day birthday celebration. She was surrounded by all of her children, most of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews and friends, she was in her element! She loved listening to all the stories, and the laughter of her family having a good time. Many in her family believe this is exactly how she would have wanted it, a huge family gathering, a Super Bowl even though Tom Brady wasn’t playing and then, eternal sleep.

She is proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, Norman, her brothers, Roger and Vernon, her sister, Pat, and her son-in-law, Don.

She is survived by her children Susan, David and Kendra, Mary and Doug and James and Roberta; her grandchildren, Nick and Jill, Neil and Susannah, Marc and Hannah, Darielle and Mike, Devon and Chris, Jacob and Kayla, and Courtney and Tyler; her great-grandchildren, Jayden, Jacee, Cora, Finn, Andrew, Isaac, Isabel, Bodie, Casen, Zayden, and Kinley.

The celebration of her life will continue at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023 at Beaver Valley Lutheran Church, Brandon. The family will be present one hour prior. Following the service, a reception will be held at George Boom Funeral Home.
