Letter to the editor: IM 25 author asks for 'yes'

Please vote yes on Initiated Measure 25. It is a simple proposition to increase the tax on cigarettes $1 a pack and use the money to buy down the cost of tuition at our technical schools. The tuition at our technical schools is the third highest in the country (most states support their two-year schools with a local property tax, South Dakota does not). The law requires the money go to the technical schools for the purposes of tuition relief. I know, I wrote it. The Attorney General’s explanation says the same thing. Most of those saying something different or otherwise speaking against IM 25 work for one of two large out-of-state tobacco companies. They know that increasing the price of tobacco is the number one way to decrease consumption which will hurt their business and save 3,200 South Dakota kids from starting smoking.
Please join over 100 other South Dakota businesses and organizations in saying No to Big Tobacco and Yes to South Dakota’s future workforce. Vote YES on IM-25.
