Letter to the Editor: Amendment C will protect your tax dollars

The power to tax is the power to destroy. These powerful words, spoken by John Marshall have weighed heavily with South Dakotans, especially in today’s world of uncertain times. We are fortunate though, to live in a state where income taxes are not collected, putting your hard-earned money back where it rightfully belongs, your pockets.
Do you the citizens of South Dakota want to be strained further with unnecessary and avoidable tax increases and the growth of the government? I for one do not. The role of the government should be limited. With limited government and a low tax umbrella in the State of South Dakota, it has put our state in a sound fiscal stance and led this great state to amazing growth while maintaining, year over year a balanced budget.
But we must not become complacent with our 0 percent income tax and more simplistic laws on not taxing your inheritance, which neighboring states such as Nebraska and Iowa currently do. South Dakota deserves protections for your hard-earned dollars, and Amendment C will do exactly that.
Amendment C would require a three-fifths or 60 percent supermajority vote on the approval of any future ballot measures that would increase taxes on hard working South Dakotans. These tax increase would come to you by way of citizen initiatives and other constitutional amendments. It should be harder to raise taxes on the ballot, and that’s why I am supporting Amendment C.
]A YES vote on Amendment C will protect your wallet. A YES vote on Amendment C will strengthen the South Dakota Constitution. A YES vote on Amendment C will preserve and protect the South Dakota commitment to keeping taxes low.
On Tuesday, June 7, stand with a commonsense fiscally responsible amendment to further support taxpayer protection.
Vote YES on Amendment C.
