The Lady Lynx played their hearts out but couldn’t break the 2-2 tie to top Yankton Aug. 29.

“It was by far the best game that we have played all year, yet it had a heartbreak of all heartbreak endings for us,” said BV girls soccer coach Jacob Shoup.

The Lynx scored early in the first half with a great turnaround finish in the box by Bre Langenhorst to take a 1-0 lead.

“We felt like we were in control from the beginning, similar to many of our other games,” Shoup said.

But with only a few minutes left in the first half, Yankton had a corner that was on the west side of the field.

“I don’t believe the kicker meant to do this, but she kicked it directly at our keeper. Since it was facing the west, Kianna couldn’t see, so she was unable to track the ball,” Shoup said.

Yankton scored directly from the corner kick to even up the score at halftime.

The second half was back and forth. The Lynx had a promising through ball to Langenhorst, who took it all the way to the end line. She then served a high-arching ball back over the 6-yard box, where BV’s Emma Haas had a nice side volley finish to put BV up 2-1.

“We were in command to get a much-needed victory, but the clock didn’t run out soon enough,” Shoup said. They played one final through ball in the waning seconds and got a questionable call outside the box by the end line.

With just seconds left on the clock, Yankton had a short corner that brought everyone to their feet. Yankton was able to get a deflection in to tie it up just before the final horn.

“Our girls were devastated, because they did everything they could have to win the game, and then it was taken from them at the end by an unfortunate call that was definitely questionable,” Shoup said.

“I’m extremely proud of the way our girls played because they fought until the end. We are still waiting for one of those breaks to go our way.”

BV had goals by Langenhorst on an assist by Chloe Askdal) and Emma Haas on an assist by Langenhorst. The team had 19 scores on goal, with eight saves and four corners by Kianna Thelen.

Yankton had 11 scores on goal, 17 keeper saves and four corners.

The Lady Lynx next host Watertown Thursday, Sept. 14 at Aspen Park. Game time is 6 p.m.
