Lady Lynx deny 2-time defending state champs

The Lady Lynx soccer team took down the Lady Govs from Pierre Friday for what may have been the first time since South Dakota high school soccer was sanctioned.
Brandon Valley handed the Governors a 2-0 defeat Aug. 16, thanks to a pair of first-half goals by a pair of Emmas.
Pierre is the two-time defending state champs and the former stomping ground for BV coach Jacob Shoup.
“We knew they were going to be tough, as they always are,” Shoup said. “They were a bit younger and were lacking some experience at all levels, but they still gave us some problems early.”
The Lady Lynx battled nerves at the start of the game, but as the minutes ticked on, they were able to settle down and find a gap in Pierre’s backline when freshman Emma Kirlin scored on a through ball one-on-one with the keeper for her first ever varsity goal.
Less than 10 minutes later, Emma Haas out-worked a couple of Pierre defenders on a great hustle play to give the Lady Lynx their second score.
BV played a tight defensive game in the second to keep the Lady Govs out of the Lynx goal.
“I thought it was an ugly game overall and neither team played what they were capable of, but to still come out on top was great to see,” Shoup said. “We were really proud of how our girls handled the adversity of the first 20 minutes and come out with a win. It was a great way to start the season.”
On Tuesday, BV hosted O’Gorman, the team that has knocked the Lady Lynx out of the playoffs via double OT shootouts the last two years.
The 1-0 Lady Lynx host the Mitchell Kernels at noon this Saturday at the BVHS Stadium and travel to West Central for a 7 p.m. game against the Trojans next Tuesday, Aug. 27.
