Lady Lynx bring home trio of state tennis honors

Although landing an 11th place team finish at the girls’ state tennis tournament “may not look glamorous,” Brandon Valley head coach Adam Rothenberger said the team played its best tennis of the year.
“The fact that we finished one place lower with nearly the same identical points as last year with a much older team … is actually very positive for us,” he said. “Each girl played their best tennis of the season and finished either at or ahead of their seed.”
Tanna Lehfeldt made the most “noise” at the tournament, securing fourth place in Flight 1 singles and fifth with her Flight 1 doubles counterpart, Sydney Pelletier. The Lady Lynx sophomore posted a 2-2 record over the three-day event that rain forced to be played indoors on Thursday and Friday. After opening with a bye, Lehfeldt, the No. 6 seed, delivered back-to-back 10-5 set losses to Peyton Forney (11th seed) of Rapid City Stevens and upset Harrisburg’s Sydney Rott (No. 3 seed). Lincoln’s Meredith Benson handed Lehfeldt her first loss in singles play, a 10-0 setback, which set the stage for her third-place match against Spearfish’s Italian exchange student, Vittoria Ragni. Lehfeldt lost 10-5.
“Tanna had an outstanding tournament finishing fourth place as a 6 seed, which earned her an all-state tournament team award,” Rothenberger said.
Lehfeldt and Pelletier capped off the season standing on the fifth-place step of the awards stand. The Lynx duo, which collected a 3-1 tournament record, ousted St. Thomas More’s Anne Knoff and Josephine Krajewski 10-6 to take the fifth-place prize.
Annabelle Schultz earned the right to play for the consolation title in Flight 4 singles. The freshman Lady Lynx finished the tourney with a 3-2 record, and fell 10-4 in the ninth-place match to Mitchell’s Ashley Jones.
When the Lady Lynx return to the court next fall, they’ll do so with their entire varsity lineup still intact, and Rothenberger views that as a huge asset for the program.
“What is really exciting is the potential that this team will have next year, even the next couple years,” he said. “Many of the teams that finished ahead of us will have a complete shake up of their lineups, while we keep everyone. We have a lot of young talent that will continue to improve and hopefully inspire even younger girls that Brandon Valley girls’ tennis is something to be a part of and ‘success’ can – and will - be a tradition.”
