Krohnke's pin seals ESD dual win over Huron

It might be fair to say that Derek Outland is a betting kind of guy.

And taking a chance paid off Friday night for the Lynx wrestling program, which remains unscathed in duals at 7-0 following their 40-26 dual at Huron.  

The Lynx head coach took a gamble in the Eastern South Dakota Conference dual by switching up the lineup to fill a void at 138 pounds. Illness forced Kobi Terpstra to watch the nail-biting ending online from the comforts of his home in Brandon. And while Brandon Valley ruled the first half of the dual, the host Tigers made things interesting in the upper weight matches, taking the prize in the 160- through 220-pound matches. With the team win riding on his shoulders, Lynx heavyweight – Sam Krohnke – wasted little time, shouldering Huron’s Devyn Balster at the 1-minute, 57-second mark to solidify the team win.

“This was a quality win against a team that many have ranked highly in the state, competing in what can be a difficult road environment,” Outland said. 

The Lynx claimed wins at 113 pounds, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152 and the match-deciding 285.

Carson Askdal (113) was the only Lynx to win by forfeit. The rest of BV’s victories came by way of pin, major decision or decision. Isaac Klinkhammer (120) upped his season mark to 16-0 by pinning Huron’s Aung Win in 1:11. Tate Johnson (126) racked up a 15-5 major decision win against Danon Huber and Jack Smith (132) shouldered Star Sun in a mere 29 seconds.

Filling in for Terpstra at 138, Teygan Harstad got the best of Joe Gonzalez, pinning him at 3:20. Creighton Klinkhammer (145) posted a 9-5 decision against Chipper Shillingstad and Damion Schunke (152) scored an 8-6 win by sudden victory over TahJae Jenkins Harris.

BV travels to Aberdeen Friday for a 1 p.m. triangular against Yankton and Aberdeen Central, and next Tuesday wrestles an ESD dual at Pierre.
