Jill's Journal: Vacations come in a trip across the state

I’m going to be sending the Lady Lynx basketball coaches and team a big thank you card.

It’s in gratitude for earning a berth to the Class AA State Basketball Tournament in Rapid City later this week, where I will be on the sidelines capturing as many moments in pictures that I can.

Although my usual sidekick, my good friend, Sharon, on these trips can’t get off of work this time, I’m still eager to pack up the Buick, fill ‘er with some fuel and head west on the ol’ interstate bound for the Hills. Of course, I may have to steer off course when I reach Wall. And it’s not the free ice water or 5-cent coffee that I’ll be heading to Wall Drug for. It’s the donuts. Those oh-so-good-donuts that if I’m honest with myself, I really don’t need.

On the heels of the pandemic and with no plans of a winter getaway scheduled, these multi-hour trips across the Rushmore state also double a mini-vacations for this gal. A few nights in a hotel, some meals not cooked by me, a dip in the hotel pool and/or hot tub are just a few of the amenities that I’m looking forward to.

Crazily so, however, this mini-vacation is going to throw my internal clock off right off its tracks. Of course, I look forward to gaining an hour once my vehicle rolls from Central Time into Mountain Time going, it loses an hour on the return trip home.

And this weekend, I’m going to losing two hours with the start of Daylight Saving Time.

That’s right – here’s a friendly reminder to set your clocks back an hour on Saturday so you’re not late for Sunday morning worship services.

As you’ll read on our sports pages this week, the Lady Lynx will be facing a familiar foe in the quarterfinals, the Harrisburg Tigers. They won’t tipoff until 7:45 p.m. MT – that’s 8:45 p.m. for you Central Time folks, and on many nights, close to my bedtime. I’ll be sure though to be “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed,” which is somewhat of a goofy saying that my dad used to say to me as a kid, as I snap away and root for a team that’s clearly driven for success.

As for the Tigers, they’re a team we’ve had the edge on this season, and I’m sure hoping we can rise to the challenge one more time this season.

I, like you, will just have to see how this whole tournament plays out. With victory on our side, I may just be busy the next two nights at 7:45 p.m. MT.

But that’s OK. There’s yet another state title in our grasp – and some yummy donuts to be had along the way.

Good luck, Lady Lynx!
