Jill's Journal: The reward is on the horizon

I’ve come to the conclusion that this year’s graduating class at Brandon Valley High School is surely destined for great things.

I mean, look at all they’ve had to endure since the near beginning of time in this big ol’ world. They were born into the 9/11 era when terrorists turned our world upside down. And then, 17, 18 years into their futures, their senior year of high school started with flood waters and ended with a worldwide pandemic.

These are significant times in America’s history books yet to be written, but chapters I have no doubt will become part of this century’s timeline and a relative part of the Class of 2020’s story.

Yet, despite all of the setbacks, all of the cancelled milestone moments of their final year of high school, somehow, these young adults have found a way to persevere, to thrive, to succeed, to move forward.

Over the past several months, like many of you, I’ve witnessed how folks in our Brandon Valley communities have attempted to “make things right,” or at least as “right” as they can be. Via social media, I took notice as people – many complete strangers – “adopted” a senior. The “unofficial adoptions” resulted in gift packages left on porches and door steps for the graduates and photos of the gift recipients bearing big, happy smiles.

I applauded our high school administration’s efforts to announce the senior’s end-of-the-year honors via a video-taped program. They also did their best to celebrate the Class of 2020 early on in the pandemic process by flipping on the stadium lights on 04/16/20, with drive-by graduation gift hand-outs, photo opps and the like.

In just 11 days, we will finally have the opportunity to celebrate in-person the accomplishments of the 245-member graduating class at Brandon Valley High School. Next week, the Brandon Valley Journal – in cooperation with our valued advertisers – are excited to put the exclamation point on their senior year with a special section dedicated to BVHS’s Class of 2020, a class destined for great things. While a special section certainly can’t change past history, it is our hope we did our job to document it.
