Jill's Journal: The Lynx Street sign

The décor in the Journal office has been a work in progress. Little by little – or nail by nail, I should say - we’re filling our brightly-painted walls with bling.
Presently, there’s a couple of wall clocks, a handful of canvas prints and a Lynx Street sign, the latter, a gift from a short-term Lynx, Brecken.
The middle school-aged boy is the son of Jenna, our former office manager at the Journal. I learned from Jenna that Brecken spied the street sign while perusing the goods at The Warehouse. The sign, I was told, was one of two that was taken out of service in Valley Springs, and subsequently ended up in a vendor booth at the Brandon business.
Turns out, Brecken had a few bucks in his pocket that day and a vacant wall in his bedroom that was in need of some décor. It was one of his first pieces of “Lynxware” that the transfer from Huron had acquired since the family relocated to Brandon nearly six months earlier.
As you read, I earlier referred to Brecken as a “short-term Lynx.” In August, an unexpected job offer back in Huron had the family packing up their belongings, leaving Brecken, a soon-to-be-Huron Tiger, with the “Lynx Street” sign.
“Brecken wants you to have this,” Jenna said on one of her last days with the Journal. In her hands was a simple street sign, weathered from the elements. While it was just a metal street sign, I was touched by the gesture. He’d caught on quick that I’m a proud Brandon Valley Lynx fan, always rooting for our boys and girls wearing our school’s  famed red and black colors.
Yes, Brecken may have only been a Lynx for the short-term, but I’m confident that his kind heart and giving spirit will unexpectedly decorate a few more walls.

A new twist to Bosses Day
For the large share of my working career, I’ve been on the giving side of Bosses Day. In the past, I’ve pitched in a few bucks with co-workers to buy flowers, cards, cake and even lunch for the office leadership.
But this year, nobody came asking for $5 or $10. Instead, the staff surprised me with a bouquet of flowers, some yummy candy and a comical card.
It was surely a new twist for me to be on the receiving end of the unofficial holiday.
While I realize that I may be the one who signs the checks and makes the large share of decisions, I honestly hadn’t thought of myself as “the boss.” I prefer to think of the staff and I as a “team.” We all have an important role at the BV Journal/Trader in the production of our weekly newspaper and shopper. And as we all know, there’s no “I” in team.
So, a heartfelt thanks to the team from the girl who, until now, hadn’t thought of herself as “the boss”.
