Jill's Journal: Life goes on

A television show that aired from 1989 to 1993 is the inspiration for this week’s installment of “Jill’s Journal.”

The show, “Life Goes On” was one of those heart-wrenching family shows. It made you laugh. It made you cry. It made you think. And it made you want to keep tuning in.

The show’s theme song, a Beatles tune, “Ob la di, ob la da,” was one of those catchy tunes that you’d hear people whistling or making their best attempt to master the catchy refrain: “Ob la di, ob-la-da, life goes on, bra. La-la, how the life goes on. Ob-la di, ob-la-da, life goes on, bra. La-la, how the life goes on.”

So, what led John Lennon and Paul McCartney to craft this tune. According to an online source, cheatsheet.com, it was Nigerian conga player Jimmy Scott-Emuakpor, who had a band called the Ob-la-di Ob-la-da Band. The band’s name came from the Yoruba phrase “ob-la-di ob-la-da,” which translates to “life goes on.”  In the 1960s, Scott became acquainted with McCartney, which hence inspired the famed tune.

According to Scott’s widow, as part of his stage act with this band, he would call out “Ob la di,” to which the audience would respond “Ob la da,” and he would then conclude, “Life goes on.”

You may have gotten a bit more history in this column than you had bargained for, but with the “quarantined” life that we’re all now experiencing, maybe a catchy tune is what just we need as “life goes on.”
