Jill's Journal: Feast or famine? To be determined

For the first time in a very long time, this Thanksgiving I won’t be waking up to the mouth-watering aroma of the turkey roasting in the oven.
Nope. Not this year.
For the first time in a very long time, this Thanksgiving I won’t be helping Mom prepare the dressing, salads, peel potatoes, go through the process of setting up tables and chairs and hauling out the “company dishes.”
Nope. Not this year.
And for the first time in a very long time, this Thanksgiving there won’t be containers of leftovers taking up ample space in the refrigerator.
Nope. Not this year.
Instead, this Thanksgiving Mom and I will make the short trip to my nephew Tim and wife Ashley’s home. And our contribution to the family meal is the dessert, which Mom has willingly volunteered to tackle. This Thanksgiving, for the first year in a very long time, I simply get to show up and belly up. At least, that’s the plan.
While it’s not my intention to throw Tim and Ashley, “under the table,” when I learned they were going to host our family Thanksgiving this year, I was sure their kind gesture would provide me a little fodder for “Jill’s Journal.”
And it turns out that I was right.
A recent call from my sister-in-law, Chris, is actually what inspired this episode of “Jill’s Journal.” Through her giggles, Chris told me that Ashley was a “little concerned” about preparing the meal.
“I’ve never made mashed potatoes from scratch,” Ashley sheepishly confessed to Chris.
Huh? Married for 10 years with three kids and a dog, how has this woman “never made mashed potatoes from scratch?”
I had to ask. Instant potatoes, I surmised.
I highly doubt that our family will go hungry this Thanksgiving. Brother Bob is taking charge of the turkey, and Chris has assured me that she’ll be educating Ashley on the ins and outs of preparing a Thanksgiving feast, mashed potatoes from scratch and all.
As for me, I guess that I will be bringing a little something to our family Thanksgiving after all: The recipe for mashed potatoes from scratch.
Happy Thanksgiving!
