Corporate America may have been able to take the girl out of the editor’s chair, but what they couldn’t do was take the editor out of the girl … at least not this girl … and not here in Brandon. I guess you could say that I’m the editor who wouldn’t go away, better yet, who’s not going away.

And that’s what leads us to a new era of community journalism for you and your family, the very people who reside in our coverage area – specifically the Brandon Valley School District – this great, community-minded area that encompasses the communities of Brandon, Valley Springs, Corson, Rowena and the surrounding East Sioux Falls area.

You may have noticed in the paragraph above that “community-minded” is italicized. It wasn’t a typo; I did it for a reason, because Brandon Valley Media Group, LLC, was founded on the community-minded premise. This corporation consists of local folks who simply believed in the dream I’ve had from the very minute I shared my dream of establishing locally-focused print and online products with them. And then they helped me share the dream with their friends and colleagues, who passed on the dream to their friends and colleagues. You get the picture.

Brandon Valley Media Group, LLC, is the parent company behind two new print products that will be mailed – yes mailed – to you weekly. The Brandon Valley Trader is our free shopper that will show up in approximately 5,500 mailboxes with Brandon and Valley Springs zip codes every Tuesday. And on Wednesdays, the Brandon Valley Journal, our weekly newspaper – a paid subscription product – will be in your mailboxes. We believe we have enough great stuff planned for both of our print products and our website that should literally have you carving out some necessary reading time in your already-busy weekly schedules.

Speaking of busy, if you’re someone who wants to read it online – you’re in luck! The Journal and Trader can be viewed on our website, www.brandonvalleyjournal.com.

Both the Brandon Valley Trader and the Brandon Valley Journal are scheduled to roll off the press this August! And our website, www.brandonvalleyjournal.com is set to go live next month.

In addition to this four-page sample of what’s to come from this newly-created local news source, the BV Journal, we’re going to give you a few weeks in August to get even more familiar with us. In the weeks to come, we’ll be blanketing the approximate 8,000 mailboxes in our coverage area with sample copies, in addition to free access to our website, brandonvalleyjournal.com.

And at that point, we’re counting on you to subscribe to the BV Journal in print, online – or better yet, both!

We’ve also set up a Facebook page – BV Journal – and a Twitter account - @bv_journal - so “friend” us and “follow” us as we begin the journey on yet another “history-making” moment in our community.

To give you a taste of what’s to come, we’ve put together this four-page sample paper. It’s filled with local news, local features, local sports and local photos – local people, issues and things we believe are important to you. And that’s just the intent we’re heading into this venture behind: Local news, local sports, local all the time!

Sure, we’ll venture out into county and the state issues from time to time, but for the most part, we’re interested in what’s happening inside the borders of our coverage area, the Brandon Valley School District.

And that’s where we need your help, too. We’ll do our best to keep tuned in to local issues that are important to us all, and we’re asking you to keep us in the know of things that are important to you: a hobby you may have or the quirky things going on in your neighbor’s backyard. If it’s important to you, it’s important to us.

I will tell you that both the BV Journal and BV Trader were “born out of love,” a love I’ve developed over the last dozen years for Brandon, Valley Springs, our slice of Minnehaha County, this amazing school district and most importantly, the hundreds and hundreds of people – all of you – that I’ve had the privilege to get to know over the last dozen years. Many of you have turned from a story subject to a friend - one story or click of a pic at a time. And I’m not done making friends just yet, folks.

Yep, Brandon Valley, I fell in love you – all of you – and so I guess it would only be fair that you shoulder some of the blame as to why I’m the editor who’s not going away.
