Jan Newton Buri, 67, of Brandon, died on Wednesday June, 22, 2022 at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. Jan’s family would like to invite everyone for a Funeral Mass and luncheon starting at 10:30 a.m, Thursday June 30, 2022 at Risen Savior Catholic Church, 301 N. Splitrock Blvd., Brandon. Burial will be at St. Michael Cemetery, Sioux Falls.

Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be held on 5-7 p.m. Wednesday June 29, 2022 at Miller Funeral Home-Downtown, 507 S, Main Ave., Sioux Falls.

In honor of Jan, the family is requesting fun or bold colored clothing for attire of any friends or family attending the visitation and funeral. Jan was always the light in the darkness, the shiny copper penny, the positive attitude when times got tough, the one that taught every individual to always give 110 percent … yet he never takes any credit. So, in honor of Jan, we are requesting guests not choose black attire for his celebration of life.

Jan Newton Buri, son of Newton Kenneth Buri and Ruby Viola (Erickson) Buri, was born on April 12, 1955. Jan resided in Hamlin County. He attended the Sioux Falls School for the Deaf from early elementary thru high school. He then attended Hamlin High School for his senior year and graduated in 1974. He went on to win the state basketball tournament and was voted homecoming king during his senior year. This is where he met his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Holiday.

Jan and Mary Ann were united in marriage on November 22, 1975 at St. Henry Catholic Church in Henry, SD. Jan attended Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown, S.D., where he received his architectural drafting degree in 1976. He went on to take a job at Spitznagel/TSP in Sioux Falls in 1976. They moved to Sioux Falls and Colton for a short period of time and eventually moved to Brandon, where they started a family. Jan and Mary Ann were blessed with three children, Michelle (1979), Lisa (1981), Dustin Newton (1985). Jan continued work at TSP for 40 years and for the last seven years has been doing independently contracted architectural work.

For Jan’s children – Michelle, Lisa, and Dustin Newton – he was their inspiration. Jan lived under the golden rule and inspired others to do the right thing and do great things. Many colleagues and friends considered him a pillar of humanity.

Jan’s love for sports continued after graduating. He played in a men’s volleyball league, bowling team and played on the adult School for the Deaf traveling basketball team. This then carried over as he began to develop young players in the Brandon community, then eventually to coaching multiple sports teams for his children and grandchildren throughout the years including basketball, volleyball, and softball. He instilled the values of team camaraderie, competitive drive, sportsmanship, and a love for the game. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter. His children and grandchildren had many opportunities to enjoy outdoor adventures with him over the years.

Jan was a man of many talents. He was also very artistic, and he passed on that artistic talent to his children and grandchildren by drawing with them any chance that he could.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann of 46 ½ years and three children, Dr. Michelle (Jonathon) Hofer of Fort Pierre, (Grady and Rayya), Lisa (Kristopher) Castelluzzo of Sioux Falls, (Sienna and Laney); Dustin (Natasha) Buri of Sioux Falls; four siblings, Jerry (Esther) Buri of Montgomery, Texas, Lynn (Sandra) Buri of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Bonnie (Rich) Smith of Baker City, Ore., and Gayle (Sarina) Buri of Kansas City, Mo.; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Newton and Ruby Buri, and his niece Heather Buri.
