Inside City Hall: Street, park and wastewater projects make for busy summer

By:
Bryan Read, city administrator
Summer is over, and we are moving into fall. That means two things. The first is snow, and we won’t talk about that. The second is that most of our improvement projects have been completed for the year.
As you know, summer in South Dakota means street construction. This past summer, our two major street projects were the resurfacing of Redwood Boulevard from Splitrock Boulevard to the new bridge over Splitrock Creek, and the next phase in the Sylvan Circle area.
The Redwood Boulevard project was a resurfacing project. This project saw significant delays due to adverse soil conditions, some weather delays and work that did not meet specifications and had to be replaced.
The largest street project was the next phase in the Sylvan Circle area. This was a complete reconstruction of all infrastructure within the project area. We understand that this is a major inconvenience to the residents in the area, and we appreciate their cooperation during the project. The project has been completed with just a few punch list items yet to be finished.
The Big Sioux Lift Station Project has been completed. The lift station went on line in May. This allows the city to pump all of our wastewater to Sioux Falls for treatment.
The Wastewater Ponds Reclamation Project is ongoing. All of the biosolids have been removed from the site, and the two ponds to the west of the site are being reconstructed to act as an equalization basin with the pond on the east side being filled in. This project is ongoing and will extend into next year for final grading and seeding.
The upgrade to the water treatment facility is underway. The improvements will allow the City to remove the increased radium levels from the water from the new Well No. 7. The project should be completed in November.
There are two ongoing projects in the park system. The first is the construction of a refrigerated hockey rink at McHardy Park by the Brandon Valley Hockey Association. The new rink will allow the rink to be used even when the temperature is above freezing and will significantly extend the skating season.
The second improvement project to our park system is the Field of Dreams at Field A in Aspen Park. The improvements include an artificial turf infield, new covered stadium seating, dugouts, protective netting and grading the outfield. The Brandon Valley Baseball Association is making these improvements. The city is building a new restroom and concession building in conjunction with the above listed improvements. It is anticipated that the improvements will be completed in time for Field A to be used next spring.
