Inside City Hall: Stay abreast of snow events with email alerts

By:
Bryan Read, city administrator
Fall is definitely here and that means that snow is right around the corner. That first snow fall usually brings with it some excitement, at least from those that don’t have to shovel it off of the driveway and sidewalk.  Unfortunately, it also brings some issues that keep the Brandon Police Department busy. There is always a rash of accidents during the first few snow events as we learn how to drive in snow again. Please slow down when it is snowing and give yourself extra time to get to where you are going safely.
Just a reminder that a snow alert will automatically occur with the accumulation of three inches of snow. Snow alerts can also be called if there is less than three inches of snow due to conditions such as high winds that cause drifting. During a snow alert, there is no parking on any street until that street has been plowed curb to curb. The public will be alerted to snow alerts by the local television stations, Facebook (www.facebook.com/officialbrandonsd/), Twitter (twitter.com/BrandonSD57005) and the City’s website (www.cityofbrandon.org). You may also sign up for email alerts on the City website at the bottom on the home page. Just click on the email notification link to sign up.
The no parking on streets during snow alerts requirement is primarily for two reasons. The first is for the safety of the snow plow operators and to reduce the risk of accidents with vehicles parked on the streets. The visibility for the plow operators can be restricted, especially at night, with the snowfall, blowing snow and snow coming off of the plow itself. The second reason is that each vehicle parked on the street will get plowed around causing the area to be plowed again at a later time.
During the snow event the City will have plows on the primary streets, but not the residential streets. The primary streets are Splitrock Boulevard, Aspen Boulevard, Sioux/Redwood Boulevard and Holly Boulevard.  Residential streets will typically be plowed the next morning starting at around 4 a.m., depending on how much snow has accumulated.
The streets will still be slippery after the snow has been plowed. The Public Works Department will apply salt or salt/sand to the streets, at the intersections, to melt any residual snow and ice accumulation.
If you have any issues with snow removal please contact City Hall at (605) 582-6515. Please drive safely this winter.
