The historic Graff Cabin, which is located in Pioneer Park, will be open to the public from 1-2 p.m. Saturday.
If you have the ability to throw a Frisbee, Michael Gross is hoping you’ll come out to play a friendly round of disc golf and in the process, help out a community organization, too.

Gross, a Realtor by trade, has organized a disc golf event and is pairing it with the Graff Cabin open house on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Pioneer Park in Brandon. Disc golf will start at 11 a.m.

The idea was inspired by Gross and his family who have been “sneaking out and doing some disc golf just to get out and about,” he said. “It’s something easy for my little kids all the way up to me to do, and I wanted to do something fun as a fundraiser for the Historical Society.”

There’s no pre-registration. Gross encourages players to “show up” and pay the suggested $5 entry fee, all of which will be gifted to the Brandon Historical Society.

Players will receive a score card and placed in socially-distanced groups, Gross said. After all players have completed the first round, the top players will advance to the next round, which will continue until a champion has been crowned.
Gross said the tournament will have age divisions, from “little kids to teens to the ‘old fogie’ group.” Prizes will be awarded.

“I might throw in some ‘historical-type’ prizes,” Gross said. “I’m not asking anybody for donations, because businesses donate stuff all of the time to so many things.”

Nova, a manufacturer of discs, is gifting the event 30 discs that participants can try out and/or borrow, if they need one to play.

Two Brandon-based businesses, Kingbird Coffee and Drop Nutrition, have confirmed they will be on-site, and Gross is awaiting confirmation from other food trucks. The Brandon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce will also have a game for the youngsters.
“In a sense, it’s just to get out and do something and to see if this is something we could create into a big event,” Gross said.

He hopes to make the disc golf tournament an annual event, and looks for more activities to be staged in conjunction with it. For instance, Circuit Fitness is making plans to organize an amazing race-like activity next year.
