Green Thumb Guru: Plant spring bulbs now for early bursts of color

If you didn’t get to those last few little projects this summer, it’s not too late. This time of year, is perfect for planting a tree or finishing up those last few landscaping projects around the house.
This time of year, trees and shrubs are not using much energy for leaves and flowers but instead can put all of that effort into root growth. Even though the leaves are gone and the plants look like they are done for the year they will continue to grow roots until the ground freezes. That can give your newly planted trees an extra month of root growth so that they are ready to go next spring. Also, many garden stores have fall sales which can save you a little cash.
If you have some problem areas around the house that tend to stay a little wet with the spring rains, now is the perfect time to address them so that you do not have a wet basement in the spring. It is never too early to plan ahead for next year either.
Spring bulbs such as tulips and daffodils need to be planted now so that when the snow clears in the spring you’ll have that early burst of color. If you have an event next summer and you need a little landscaping done, now is the time to start planning so that it can be done early next year. Enjoy the last few days of nice weather and spend some time in the garden finishing projects and planning for next year.
