Chad Garrow was drenched Friday night. First by a steady rain that fell throughout the second half of the game. And second, when his players doused him with a cooler of water in celebration of the Brandon Valley football coach’s 100th victory.
But the Lynx head coach didn’t seem to mind, as the 34-0 milestone victory over the visiting Watertown Arrows also signified the program’s second consecutive Eastern South Dakota Conference championship.
Following the celebratory ritual, Garrow was quick to credit to his fellow coaches and players.
“This staff has been with me this whole time, and so I couldn’t do a lot of the things we do without the staff. And obviously, you can’t win games without great players and we’ve had a lot of great players over the years,” he said.
The Lynx went right to work Friday night, needing just two plays in their first two series on offense. BV’s initial score came just 43 seconds into the game when Lynx QB Ty McCann put the ball in the hands of
Braiden Petersen, who scampered 47 yards down the home crowd sideline. A little over six minutes later, Petersen hauled it 53 yards, and McCann’s conversion pass to Cole Siegfried gave BV a 14-0 lead.
Petersen’s 4-yard TD run with 2:51 left in the first half made it 21-0.
The Lynx padded their lead with two more scores in the rain-dampened second-half. The first was a 49-yard TD run by senior Cade Terveer, lighting up the board at 9:21. McCann’s 1-yard quarterback sneak with 7:52 remaining in the game closed out the scoring.
Watertown’s best scoring chance came late in the second quarter, but Blake Mitchell’s 36-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Terveer.
Garrow said his team’s strong start fueled the win.
“We were able to get a good start on a formation that we knew we could take advantage of and we got a quick touchdown by Braiden and that kind of got things going,” he said. “We were able to mix it up a little bit at the beginning and get that lead and then just protected it in the second half.”
BV did most of their damage on the ground, rushing for 315 of their 330 total yards. One of this season’s “greats” – Petersen – rushed the ball 22 times for 198 yards and three of the home team’s five scores.
Terveer added 63 yards rushing and reserve quarterback Ethan Tellinghuisen 41. Terveer also spearheaded the team’s defensive effort with two quarterback sacks, eight tackles and a fumble recovery.
McCann completed 3-7 passes for 15 yards.
Micah McGee had four tackles in the game, while Andrew Hanson and Cole Jensen both had three.
The Lynx not only ran the ball effectively on Friday, but prevented the Arrows from mustering any kind of a ground game. Watertown finished with a negative 14 yards rushing on 21 attempts, and were limited to 87 total yards.
For Watertown, Brennan Gabriel completed 6-20 passes for 90 yards, teaming with Garrett Determan four times for 41 yards.
The Lynx host Yankton at 7 p.m. Friday. The Bucks (2-5) are coming off a 47-7 win over Sturgis.
