Finance officers report no filings for city council, commission received

City finance officers in both Brandon and Valley Springs confirmed Monday the have yet to receive a filing for the respective vacancies on their city boards.

Candidates for mayor, Wards 2 and 3 in Brandon and a commissioner position in Valley Springs have nine days to file their petition for nomination. 

Up for grabs this year in Brandon are four-year terms for the mayor and Ward 2, which are currently held by Harry Buck and Dana Clark, respectively. Both Ward 3 seats will be up for election. One of the positions is for one year and the other is a three-year stint. Those chairs are presently filled by Colin Steen and Bruce Johnson, both who were appointed in 2022.

In Valley Springs, a five-year commission term – is currently filled by Jeff Shawd, who was appointed to the position following Brian Staeffler’s – is also up for election.

The deadline to file petitions for nomination is 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24.

If warranted, city elections in both communities will be held Tuesday, April 11.

The Brandon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and the Brandon Valley Journal will co-sponsor a forum for Brandon candidates beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 14 in the Brandon City Council Chambers. The event is open to the public and may also be viewed live on the BV Journal Facebook page.
