The working poor.
Senior citizens.
Veterans.
People who are ill.
The man who lives next door.
“It’s just a plethora of any and everybody that needs food, and that’s why we’re here,” said Linda Weber, the executive director of the Brandon Area Food Pantry. “And this is another example of buying and shopping local, because we are local and take care of our local people, whether they live in Valley Springs, outside of Renner, Rowena or Corson.”
The ongoing need is also the reason behind the BAFP’s sixth annual fundraising dinner set for Friday, Dec. 1 (Dec. 2 in case of inclement weather) at the Brandon Golf Course. A cash bar opens at 6 p.m., and dinner and a short program follow at 7. This year’s main course is pork wellington, which will be prepared by Chef Jason and staff from Tony’s Catering.
“I think it’s going to be a fantastic meal and hopefully a fantastic turnout,” Weber said.
Of the 27 tables – each set for eight – only a few remain available, Weber said. Tickets are $35 per person or $280 for a table of eight, and ticket sales close Nov. 24.
Proceeds from the dinner is used to purchase meat and other items the BAFP is in need of.
“Every donation is important and the need is always great,” Weber said. “Without donations, local families that are food insecure struggle to find ways to feed their families, and with continued support the Brandon Area Food Pantry is able to be there for them.”
Since the BAFP opened its doors in November of 2008, Weber said the local need continues to climb.
“It has not changed, it has not changed at all,” she said. “More people need help.”
The BAFP is open 4-6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and at this time, Weber said the volunteer staff is able to accommodate the clientele.
“If there is a need (to expand hours), it will happen,” she assured.
In addition to Weber, the BAFP is staffed by volunteers Amy Weber, Judy Zimmerman, Diane Shomion, and John and Marilyn Solmaria.
Steve Kielman is the acting president of the board of directors. Merv Kramer serves as the group’s vice president, and Geri Schultz is the secretary-treasurer. Dave Swier and Jana Lovrien complete the board.
Weber said the BAFP is fortunate to have these individuals working for the greater good of the organization.
“It’s because they believe in it and they’re very good in what they do,” she said. “They’re definitely committed, absolutely.”
To donate to the Brandon Area Food Pantry, contributions may be mailed to BAFP, P.O. Box 712, Brandon, SD 57005, dropped off at the Pantry, 406 Main Ave., or by calling (605) 582-7001.
