Sioux Falls Lincoln got a heavy dose of Brandon Valley – and Braiden Petersen – Friday evening. Coming off the lopsided Pigskin Classic loss in week one to sure-footed Washington, the Lynx – and Petersen – were a dominating force in Friday’s 38-24 Metro Conference victory. The Lynx senior set a new school rushing record - previously set by Nate Mahone in 2005 - racking up 270 yards on 29 carries that resulted in four TDs that came early - and often.

“This was a good win for us coming off last week,” Lynx head coach Chad Garrow said. “The big thing is that we keep getting better. I thought we reacted, we learned a lot during the game again, and fortunately we were ahead to be able to learn things like that, so we’ll just keep working at it and hopefully keep getting better.”

The first 74 yards of Petersen’s 270 game-high yardage came on the second play of BV’s opening drive. Facing second and 10, Petersen scampered to the right and high-tailed it 74 yards into the end zone. Jorey Sorenson’s PAT kick was good, and with 11:29 to play, the Lynx had the 7-0 advantage.

After the BV defense forced the Pats to a 3-and-out, Lynx QB Tom Scholten put the ball in Petersen’s hands once again, and this time he delivered a 32-yard TD run to cap off the five-play drive. After the kick failed, the Lynx held a 13-0 lead with 8:13 yet to play in the first quarter.

BV lit up the scoreboard one more time before the quarter’s end. Facing fourth and inches at midfield, Scholten connected with an open Cade Terveer, who it took 42 yards to just inside the 10. On third and goal from the 2-yard line, Petersen broke through a pair of Lincoln defenders to post his third TD of the night to give his team a 20-0 edge.

A 25-yard field goal by Sorenson at 4:31 of the second quarter padded BV’s 23-0 lead.

With five seconds left in the half, Lincoln positioned themselves to cash in on a 33-yard field goal by Liam Downey to make it a 23-3 game.

Lincoln made things interesting in the third quarter, scoring twice in less than three minutes. The first came on a 40-yard Preston Eisenbraun pass to Zach Hanson, and Downey’s kick was good for the 23-10 score with 8:32 to go.

The Pats made things even more interesting when the Lincoln QB hauled it a yard across the goal line with 6:18 to play in the third. At that point, the Lynx held a slim 23-17 lead.

With their once sizeable lead now chiseled down to six, BV’s offense went back to work. The six-play, 45-yard drive resulted in a 5-yard Scholten to Cole Siegfried pass play to the far-right corner, followed up by a PAT pass from Scholten to Carter Olthoff, making it a 14-point separation - 31-17 - with 9:31 to play.

Lincoln answered back at just under four minutes to play on a 24-yard Eisenbraun pass to Wyatt VanDenTop. Downey’s kick was good, and once again, Lincoln was within striking distance, 31-24.

The Lynx, however, were determined to preserve the lead and put the ball back in Petersen’s hands, who scampered in from six yards out, to cap off the six-play, 80-yard drive. Sorenson’s kick dropped through the uprights for what would be the 38-24 ending.

“We found a way to escape at the end,” said a relieved Garrow. “I told the kids that I thought we really dominated the first half upfront, and I felt like in the second half we were a little bit complacent, relaxed a little bit. They were taking the motion to us, and so it just challenged them. I said, ‘Hey, we’ve got two, 6-7 tackles and they’re working together and they’re getting pushed in the backfield, and it just can’t happen,’ and the next drive those guys came down and dominated things.”

The Lynx had a big night on both sides of the ball. With the ball, BV racked up 446 yards, while Lincoln was contained to 190 total yards.

BV finished the night with 326 yards rushing (39 attempts), the bulk of which was credited to Petersen. Scholten scampered 23 yards and Terveer and Ty McCann had 15 and 14 yards, respectively. The Lynx literally shut down Lincoln’s ground game, containing them to a mere eight yards on 24 tries. Scholten, who completed 11-20 pass attempts, racked up 120 yards and one TD. Lincoln’s Eisenbraun completed 18-of-29 for 182 yards and a pair of TD scores.

On the receiving end of Scholten’s passes were Adam Niessenk (4-28 yards), Terveer (3-63), Siegfried (3-26) and Olthoff (1-3).

Jesse Steffel led the BV defense with seven tackles. Andrew Hanson was credited with six, while Terveer and Micah McGee registered five and four, respectively, along with a pair of QB sacks for each.

This Friday, BV heads to Aberdeen, where the 1-1 teams will battle it out. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 28-27 win against Huron, and a 42-8 loss in week one against O’Gorman.
