Duncan’s keen play leads BV on the links

Liz Duncan chips onto the green during the Yankton Invite. The Lady Lynx senior has captured three consecutive medalist honors and was runner-up at the Yankton meet.

Liz Duncan is living up to Coach Todd Geerdes’ pre-season prediction that the senior Lady Lynx would be playing some leader-of-the-pack golf this season. Last week, Duncan picked up her third straight medalist title and was nipped for a fourth on the third hold of a sudden-death playoff Friday at the Yankton Invite.

Duncan’s keen play on the links this season has guided the Brandon Valley girls to a variety of front-runner team finishes that included runner-up at the Huron Invite, fourth at Yankton and a dual win by 18 strokes at Madison.

“The girls did a great job of all competing and playing some of their best golf this year this past week,” Geerdes said. “This week we had a good week of practice at the range and working on our chipping and putting and it showed today with an overall second place finish in the Huron Invite,” Geerdes said.

Duncan carded a 76 at Huron to make it three in a row. The following day at Yankton, she went head to head with Aberdeen Central’s Sydney Wirebaugh. Each girl shot 1-over 73 for the low individual round but Wirebaugh claimed medalist honors in the third hole of a playoff.

On the first playoff hole, played on No. 18, Wirebaugh knocked her second shot within five feet of the cup, but Duncan drained a long putt to force a second hole. After an uneventful second playoff hole (No. 15), the pair returned to No. 18, where Duncan’s second shot forced a drop, opening the door for Wirebaugh’s victory.

Julia Andresen and Tanna Lehfeldt both carded 85’s at Huron to tie for 16th place, which was Lehfeldt’s best career score to date. Hannah Deville rounded out the Lynx scoring with a solid 88.
Jessica Krogman, Abby Erkonen and Ashlea Wolfe also saw tournament action.

O’Gorman and Aberdeen Central tied for the low team score at Yankton, each posting 331. The Knights won the team title by virtue of a lower score for the team’s fifth golfer.

“We are excited about the final month of the season and continue to work hard, have fun and prepare for our conference meets and the state meet in Moccasin Creek in Aberdeen in June,” Geerdes said.

The Lady Lynx competed in a five-team meet at Brookings on May 8 and this Friday head to the Mitchell Invite.
