Committees dive into proposed legislation

Rep. Steve Haugaard, District 10
PIERRE – Week Three of our Legislative Session begins the daily work of committee consideration of the proposed legislation. This will consume our time for the next several weeks. Also, each legislator must have their proposed legislation ready for final drafting in the next few days.
This past week we enjoyed having many friends from Brandon, which included a great representation of students who were able to observe the legislature at work. They were also able to take a behind the scenes look at the Capitol Dome. which is a nice treat, as it is an opportunity to see the actual structure of the Capitol building.
Many House and Senate bills are getting attention as they are touching on various controversial issues. Please bear in mind that a bill doesn’t actually become law until it makes it all the way through both the House and the Senate and is signed by the Governor. Each year we invest a lot of time and emotion into bills that eventually die.
Please listen to the proceedings live on South Dakota Public Broadcasting or go to the Legislative Research Council’s website to listen to the recorded committees and floor debate. That’s found at
